We forget it's scifi because what it is, really, is a breakup movie with just a little bit of magical realism. Basically, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the movie that most accurately depicts what breakup is like. It's an inevitable part of breaking up and letting go. But more importantly, what the movie does is take something that does happen and simply just accelerate the time frame.īecause people do forget. Like a dream upon waking.' makes it sound so plausible. The way Howard explains the Lacuna technology: 'Technically the procedure IS brain damage, but nothing you'll miss, akin to a night of heavy drinking. The technology to forcibly erase memories does not exist. The movie is so relatable that you often forget one fact: is how, more than anything, all these elements combined together make the movie feel intensely real. But what gets to you more than the bittersweet nostalgia of Joel's memories of Clementine, or the comic relief from the awkward meta-tale of the bumbling Lacuna employees, or Gondry's inspired and creative cinematography and editing, or Kaufman's wit, or the fantastic performances. Watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a heartbreaking, yet also quite comedic, experience. Jim Carrey is and always will be one of the very few Actors alive that always make me smile. He plays it so well, so deep and so true that it is for me one of the Best Acting Performances of the last Decade, along with Daniel Day Lewis in 'There will be Blood' and Bill Murray in 'Lost in Translation' I really could identify with the Character of 'Joel Barish' in Eternal Sunshine. I really hope that more directors and Casting Directors will choose him for a Lead Performance. He NEEDS more serious roles, he deserves at least one Oscar in his career. I always appreciated him as a Comedy Actor and i also loved him in 'Number 23', but I was blown away by him in this Picture. Jim Carrey delivered an astonishing Performance. Kirsten Dunst and Tom Wilkinson were amazing also, but Jim Carrey. Kate Winslet really did deserve her Oscar Nomination for this one. It was almost perfect, i absolutely fell in love with the script, i loved the Camerawork and most important. And i think i´m Captain Obvious here, but what a magical Movie.
